Level 1 Beginner (just getting started)

If you have never swing danced before or are relatively new to it, this is your class. Detailed instruction on the basics will have your two left feet gliding with confidence in no time. We start from the absolute beginning and build, step by step, so rest assured you won’t get left behind. You can start anytime, classes are structured around the ability of the dancers in the room on the night, not by which week of the month it is.

Class time: Wednesdays from 7:00 - 7:50pm Cost: $15 or $20 when combined with a Level 1.5 Seasoned Beginner class

Level 1.5 Seasoned Beginner (time to challenge yourself)

You have been learning swing dancing for a while in the beginner classes, and you've definitely been bitten by the Swing Bug! You want to get to the Intermediate class, but it’s just a little daunting, this is your class. We move further along from the beginner class, introducing the moves that will prepare you for the higher level Intermediate class. It’s 40 minutes of just the right stuff to get you where you want to go.

Class time: Wednesdays from 7:50 - 8:40pm Cost: $15 or $20 when combined with a Level 1 Beginner class (10 min of social dancing after to practice)

Level 2 Intermediate (ramping it up!)

You know your way around the basics, this epic class fills your library (brain space) with moves, moves, moves. Structured in a progressive dance style, you get comprehensive breakdowns of each move and song after song to practice, changing partners as you drill until it is as natural as walking. If you missed the gym this week, it won’t feel like it!
There is lots of humour and light-hearted fun in the teaching styles, happy faces abound and great friendships are created right here.
We also put together a choreographed routine using content we have learnt through the year that we teach around October to perform at our end of year dance, all this and recapping our swing strolls will fill your brain to bursting point, oh.. and bring your water bottle and towel, you will need it!

Class time: Wednesdays from 8:50 - 9:40 pm Cost: $20 includes free Level 1 Beginner class & Level 1.5 Seasoned Beginner class (at 8:40 there is 10 min social dancing before class to warmup)

Level 3 Advanced (breaking all the rules and making new ones)

This class is about breaking boundaries, bringing in intuitiveness, spontaneity and personality to explore your limits and push them further back or eliminate them altogether! You can expect to learn some super cool & flashy stuff. Be challenged with different speeds & rhythms while gaining a deeper understanding of how swing music is structured to be able to express it and yourself on the dance floor. Become one of those people who can predict what’s happening in the song and dance like you are part of it!

Class time: Wednesdays (On hold until we assess the current level of interest, could be back very soon! Come along to the intermediate class and express your interest)
Tip: forming a circle with your friends and chanting “Bring Back Advanced!” would get our attention
😎

How do I know which classes are right for me?

That is the million dollar question!

We have put together an “Am I Ready for the Next Level?” info sheet so that you can be better informed as to which class/classes are best for you. It outlines what you can expect from each class and what dance experience you should have to participate successfully in each class.

If you are in doubt, please come and talk to us before the class so we can best advise you.

Performances

This is where we get to show off all of the hard work we have put in learning all through the year. Our end of year performances are always a big hit. A great opportunity to rise to a challenge, overcome fear and bond with some truly amazing souls!

Swing Dance styles we teach

We normally are teaching Lindy Hop at Mitcham, this involves a lot of 8 beat moves (step, step, triple step, step, step, triple step), Charleston moves and 6 beat moves (rock step, triple step, triple step). It is thoroughly rewarding, challenging and very addictive!

We do introduce a little of Solo Jazz, Blues dancing, Slow Lindy , Collegiate Shag, Balboa and Slow Bal. These, at the moment are more like taster classes than full on intensive blocks of lessons but we are open to the idea of opening up new classes if the demand is there.

We had a very successful Balboa and Slow Balboa class that ran for quite a long time in Ashburton, we may start something up again if the desire is great enough.
Balboa is a passion of ours so if you want it, we’ll bring it!
